How to Paint a Metal Fence or Gate

Having a metal fence or gate on your property is a great way to improve security whilst maintaining the aesthetic quality of your premises. However, from time to time you may find that your gates or fences need a lick of paint to keep them looking as good as possible. However, while it is not exactly a mammoth task, it is not as simple as it seems. This article will go through the steps required to ensure that you add the perfect finish to your fences and gates.

What paints do I need to use for a metal fence or gate?

In order to get the desired finish and not damage the metal, you need to use special metal paints. As the name suggests, these are specially designed for usage on metals, and as such they have properties that normal paints do not. They are very durable, and their oil base means they are resistant to water and strong sunlight. An extra step you can take is to use primer on the surfaces before adding the metal paint. If you use the appropriate primer, you can enjoy a much longer lifespan from your coat of paint. Keep in mind that special paint should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight.

When should my fence or gate be painted?

The best time to paint your gates and fences is in the summer, as the (hopefully) warmer temperatures will allow it to set more quickly. For extra peace of mind, checking the weather forecast the day before you plan to paint can help you avoid any weather-related issues.

What is the painting process?

Step 1 – Make sure floors around you and under the gate or fence are protected with plastic sheeting – this means you won’t have to deal with any paint dripping and setting on your floor.

Step 2 – If you find that the metal has rusted, then it needs to be smoothed down before it can be painted. Use sandpaper to smooth away any rust or paint flakes – wear a protective mask when carrying out this part of the job.

Step 3 – Make sure new metals or pre-painted metals are thoroughly cleaned before starting, as this helps get rid of dust and grease that may have built up on the surface. You can do this by using a mild detergent.

Step 4 – If you have cleaned the surface, allow it to dry before applying the aforementioned primer.

Step 5 – Once the primer has dried, you can then use a small brush or a spray gun to apply your chosen paint to the surface.

Step 6 – Once the paint is completely dry, you can apply a second coat if necessary, but usually most gates and fences only require one coat of paint.

As well as the particular steps to take whilst carrying out the actual painting process, there are a number of safety precautions that should be taken to prevent injury or health risks – respiratory masks, protective goggles and clothing and stepladders should all be used where necessary to ensure maximum safety when carrying out your work.

Painting a fence or gate is a highly effective way to add a new lease of life to your property, whether you’re changing the colour or you’re simply refreshing an existing coat. By following the steps above you can ensure that you are left with brilliant results.
